In
Heidi's encaustic workshop, you will learn lots of
encaustic techniques as well as her unique approach to the art of
painting with beeswax!
Heidi will encourage students to learn & experiment
with a vast variety of encaustic techniques, creating sample boards as
well as completed art which they
will take home for future reference.
Heidi has written a detailed encaustic
handbook which is only provided in the 2 day workshop. It contains technical info, thorough supplier and material lists, safety
precautions, procedures, and a "sticker approach" to note taking which she
developed. This handbook enables the student to focus on painting and having
fun, instead of taking notes!
As well as completing 4-10 pieces of
art, students will walk away with all the knowledge needed to embark on their
encaustic journey! Content will include the history of encaustic
painting, a review of basic materials, encaustic safety for
people and art, lots of technique demos and studio time.
Workshops also include coffee, tea and post workshop phone/email
support as students begin working independently in their own studios at home.
Attendance is limited to
only 4 students for plenty of individualized attention &
work space. All students will work with a personal hot plate so they don't have
to share pigment palettes.
Students may bring personal materials however they will only supplement supplies that will
already be provided.
Heidi's Comprehensive Encaustic Workshop
is a 9 day course, divided into sections which may be taken
separately or all together. 2 day technique workshops usually
alternate in their scheduling over the weekend, followed by mixed
media studio time. Students may choose between the workshops and take
advantage of the mixed media studio time. Serious students who are
ready for master level study with Heidi, may opt to take the full 9 day
course. A $100 discount is offered when scheduling consecutively
for all 9 days. Since many students travel from outside of
the region, this option allows students to condense their travel while
maximizing their art experience.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
2 DAYS WITH AN EMPHASIS IN PAINTING, CARVING, & TEXTURE focuses our
attention on building rich texture, and carving deep into the wax
surface. Techniques taught will include the use of rubber
stamps, scraping patina-like texture, using a variety of stencils, and
diverse brush work. This workshop is perfect for both beginning
and experienced encaustic students.
2 DAYS WITH AN EMPHASIS IN COLLAGE & PHOTOGRAPHY focuses our attention
on embedding objects and existing imagery into the hot molten wax.
Techniques taught will include collage, photo underlays, photo
transfers, embedding photographic tissues, and jas paper transfers.
Students may bring photography or other found images or they may use
visual materials that are provided. This workshop is perfect for
both beginning and experienced students.
MIXED MEDIA & STUDIO DAYS are offered consecutively after each 2 day
workshop to allow students more studio time to practice what they have
learned and introduce other materials such as oil sticks, shellac,
wall board compound, graphite, carbon, pastels, tea crystals, gold leaf foil, and more! *Prerequisite: completion of a 2 day workshop
2 DAYS WITH ENCAUSTIC
MONOTYPE PRINTING focuses our attention on printing on paper with
pigmented beeswax. One of a kind prints are created using simple mark
making with pigment bars, brushes, silicone subtractive tools, wooden
print blocks, and stencils. Prints can be single-pass images
which leave areas of the paper open, or they may be overprinted many
times creating layered depth of color. Clear or lightly pigmented wax
makes thinner paper translucent, allowing for light to come through.
We will explore working with different
temperatures, different types and sizes of paper, full bleed prints,
and clean plate
prints.
MIXED
MEDIA MONOTYPE STUDIO DAYS are offered as a 3rd day after the Monotype
workshop to introduce mixed media elements and different type of
drawing implements. This is also an opportunity to work on
projects, hone in your skills, and perhaps work a little larger.
Prerequisite: completion of a 2 day monotype workshop
